It's a bad copy, but you get the gist of what the film is about. The actrss name is Mae Clarke
who is notable for her role in numerous Hal Roach
production of the 1920's and 1930's along Laurel and Hardy. Three stars for a good attempt of bringing Carrol's work to the screen the first time and and none for the copy. (These films were shown on nicheloeons in that time)
you're right, it is a bad copy

I thought even tho the quality was not that great, the content was superb.I would rate higher if the print had been better.

I downloaded the lo-fi mpeg4 and put on some ambient background music. The blend of film and digital artifacts was mesmerizing! I wish the movie was longer :)
Wonderful video.

This movie of Alice in Wonderland stars May Clark not Mae Clarke. They are 2 totally seperate actresses. Mae Clarke was born in 1910 so, of course, couldn't have been in this 1903 movie.

It's not the quality is bad, but the film is in the advanced stage of decompsition. Untill 1952, Nitrate filmstock was used which was flammable and deteriorated over time. When you hear people on AMC and TCM talking about "preserving film", think about this movie. Judging by the picture, this was saved at the 11th hour before during to dust.

Wow! How wonderful to see a version of "Alice" that isn't a copy of the Disney cartoon "sweet and innocent" version. Not that this isn't innocent but it seems a bit more demented which is how I have always imagined the story in my head.
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a.k.a. Lewis Carroll's character is arguably a bit questionable concerning his relationship with Alice Liddell for whom many believe he wrote the the "Alice" and the "Through the Looking Glass" stories. That aside, this is a great piece of film and it is sad that more wasn't saved from the savage hands of time.
I so wish that I could go back in time and watch these films as they were first shown!
A True Classic!

This earliest film of Alice in Wonderland is an amazing find for it's early use of both the camera and a look into special effects techniques being invented at the time. I remember seeing it in a torrent file with an essay that outlined the entire production and the players used. Another great backward dive into the looking glass is the early 30's version of the story that features W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty and also includes Cary Grant (as the March Hare)and Gary Cooper, among others...It would be great if anyone could dig that one up and upload it as a file here.
